We have literally been inundated with phone calls from patients who want to schedule appointments after Governor Walz COVID-19 briefing on Tuesday May 4th. Yes, the Governor did say offices could re-open on May 11th. But it’s not that simple. We also have to have a plan on HOW we re-open. The Minnesota Board of Dentistry e-mailed an 8 page template that dental offices are expected to customize for their particular situation. Part of that template deals with PPE (personal protective equipment). All staff are expected to use N95 masks. Since these are in short supply, OSHA will be allowing dental offices to re-use the N95 masks, and expect them to be covered with a level 3 mask to prolong their use. Level 3 masks are also in short supply, and we are expected to have a 30 day supply for all staff. The availability of PPE will be the rate-limiting step which determines how fast we (and every other dental office) can re-open. There are many other issues that need to be addressed as well prior to re-opening the clinic; this is just the most important one. The entire staff and I will be meeting to discuss these issues.
